Over the past decade, one of the biggest trends in the food service industry has been the continued demand for fresh healthy food. While many restaurant chains have struggled to incorporate this into their menu, one new chain is continuing to grow due to the fact that they have focused on providing consumers with a healthy, affordable, and accessible healthy meal option.

 

The newest chain, Sweetgreens, was opened in 2007 in Washington DC. Three former Georgetown students, who came up with the idea while they were still in school, established the chain. The founders came up with the idea while they were discussing a lack of healthy and affordable meal options. After raising some capital from family and friends, the three founders opened up their first location just outside of the Georgetown campus.

 

The concept of Sweetgreens, which is essentially a high-end salad bar concept, has grown in popularity considerably. The company has expanded a lot over the past few years and how has over 40 locations in DC, New York, California, and other areas on the east and west coast. The company is planning on expanding into new markets, including Chicago, over the next few years.

 

Several factors about Sweetgreens help to separate the company from its competitors. One of the main differentiators is the fact that they incorporate technology into their stores as much as possible.

 

Furthermore, the company focuses on improving service at all levels of the organization. Regardless of the employee’s responsibility, each employee in the company is required to spend at least five days were year working at one of the stores. This helps to keep all employees aligned and focused on the interest of the individual customer.

 

Nathaniel Ru is one of the original three founders of the restaurant chain and continues to be very vital in the growth of the company today. He has been largely involved in the development and rollout of the mobile application, website, and other capabilities that have helped the company grow into a nationwide chain. Ru is also involved when it comes to speaking with investors and the press about the current state of the company and future expansion into other markets across the country.
